Description

annnnddd here he is! ALL FINISHED (even after I had to wrestle a hawk outa my room – yeah SERIOUSLY; I’ll throw some pics up of that soon). A new image for my DoL (Dragons of Literature) series! WRAITH from Dragoncharm by Graham Edwards

WIPs:
Sketch: [link]
Colour Start: [link]

So at long last we have a finished Wraith! As promised, here is his full description:

Only with the greatest difficulty could she make out its shape. It had massive black wing and seemed to have too many legs. Like a spider.

And it was black. Utterly black.

And it was beautiful.

A head like a claw flexed and turned their way. The dragon looked across at them with featureless yellow eye, the only points of colour on a form as black as midnight. ... She heard the dragon’s breath, smooth and deep, and felt it suck heat from her like a sheet of ice
[pg 83]

Wraith’s great size was enough to explain much of his strength. His chest was huge; dragons swore they could hear even from a distance the heart which thundered within. His body was dark and undecorated – expect for the wide carapace which sprouted from the back of his long, tapering head. This armour protected his back and neck when he was in flight and created a black crown that followed his gaze when at rest. His wings were of phenomenal size, glittering with hidden metals and stored charm. Wraith was clearly capable of flight without magic, he preferred to use both.

But what above all set Wraith apart was his hold on the Realm.

Most dragons only ended the Realm only when they needed to, considering it too dangerous to remain in there for anything but the briefest of times.

Not so with Wraith. He was there all the time.

And to this end he had twisted his body into a form which allowed him to maintain constant access to the Realm and grown two extra limbs from his distorted shoulders. These arms extended out from either side of his backbone at the base of his sinuous neck, long, thin rods so fleshless as to be virtual bones, each bent twice at a rough knobbed joint and ended ... nowhere.

Or rather, ended in the Realm.

Alone among dragons, Wraith had made solid the imaginary claws most other Charmed used to break the Realm membrane. As his extra limbs left this world, fading from the view of ordinary eyes like melting snow, so they appeared in that seething pit which was the source of all fire charm. The power needed to maintain the integrity of this junction between the worlds was colossal, but then Wraith too was colossal and such power was his to command.

And that is what makes him a monster, ...
[pg 193]

Extracts from Graham Edward’s ‘Dragoncharm’

I am aware that these extracts only explain what Wraith looks like and thus raise more questions; as in ‘What is the Realm?’ and so on; but I’d rather not spoil them for you if you plan on reading them.

Yes these books are sadly out of print; but if you can get a hold of them I urge you to read them they are FANTASTIC! One of the few sets of books I have read several times. The so called ‘evil’ characters in the books always fascinated me, Wraith mainly. He only appears in one book, but his usual design and large amounts of epic make him a character worth remembering long after you put the book down.

Next I’m going to try and tackle Archan ^^ the dragoness with no eyes and legs ^^; Awesome, awesome design.

Comments are more than welcome ^^
